Australia Awards Women Trading Globally program participant begins sales to Australia from Indonesia

01.05.2020 Angela Wright

In 2019, Annisa Pratiwi, Co-founder of Ladang Lima, participated in the Australia Awards Women Trading Globally Program funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The program focused on building the export capabilities of 15 female entrepreneurs from countries in South East Asia and Mongolia. The program was delivered in Brisbane and Sydney over two weeks, and the timing of the program coincided with the Naturally Good Expo in Sydney.

It was during her free time one weekend that Ms Pratiwi attended the expo and introduced herself to an Australian company who became interested in her products. Several months later, she successfully sent two shipments to Melbourne and is looking forward to continuing sales to Australia.

Ladang Lima is a cassava flour manufacturer and a pioneer in Indonesia of gluten-free food products such as pasta and cookies. As a mother, Ms Pratiwi believes in the company’s pillars for healthy food production - no preservatives, no MSG, no artificial colours, no synthetic sweeteners, gluten-free and rich in nutrition. She has been recognised through a number of awards, including 2nd place Food Start-Up Indonesia by Creative Economy Agency of Indonesia 2017, 1st place Indonesian Accelerator Program, Investing in Women by Australian Embassy and Patamar Capital 2017, 3rdplace Jamkrindo Start-Up Challenge 2018, and 1st place creative innovation award by Amvesindo 2018.

New Knowledge about Export

Although Ladang Lima had previously experienced international sales, Ms Pratiwi recalls that she gained a lot of new knowledge about how to export during the program. She was also able to meet other participants from Indonesia. After returning from Australia there was an opportunity to collaborate at a coffee fair last November in Jakarta with Dian Elvira Rosa of Kemala Home Living who supplied decorations and tableware.

As a result of participating in the Australia Awards Women Trading Globally program, Ladang Lima’s export sales increased from the end of 2019 to early 2020. Ms Pratiwi is pleased to share that she has now reached new export markets including the Philippines, Chicago, Sydney and Melbourne.

The program allowed Ms Pratiwi and other participants to meet female entrepreneurs from Cambodia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, Timor Leste, and Mongolia. Her favourite part of the program was the time shared with fellow businesswomen discussing their various experiences in exporting.

“I have a new spirit thanks to the women who spoke during the class... I was inspired by other participants. Also, knowledge about Incoterms made me more confident in dealing with buyers.”

There is something to be said about timing and making good connections in business, and the ECA is pleased to see the export outcomes so far from Ms Pratiwi’s time on the program. We wish her all the best in her future export endeavours.
