China is Australia's largest two-way trading partner in goods and services (valued at $150.0 billion in 2015-16, up 4.4 per cent on the previous year).
China is our largest export market ($85.9 billion in 2015-16) and our largest source of imports ($64.1 billion in 2015-16).
The China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) entered into force on 20 December 2015. The Agreement has already enhance the growing trade and investment relationship between our highly complementary economies. It will ensure the competitiveness of Australia's agricultural and manufacturing industries, protect and ensure the competitiveness of our services providers and attract greater investment in Australia.
96% of all Australian goods will enter China duty free when ChAFTA is fully implemented. And Australian services providers benefit from new access to China's significant and growing services sector. Increasing numbers of Australian businesses are entering the Chinese market with great success. However – like all cross border commercial activities – the benefits of doing business in China are coupled with risks. These risks can, however, be mitigated education and preparation before entering the China market.
The Export Council of Australia (ECA) is delighted to present a new series of workshops aimed at helping Australian MSMEs take on the China market with confidence, giving them the best chance of success.
